“No,” he said. “Not really.”
Rather, his basis for selection was based on having seen some “extremely
big” models, needing to provide Bond with a watch that would
immediately, conspicuously indicate the trappings of success. To wit:
Taken from a police evidence locker, property of an incarcerated drug
dealer, Jeffery Deaver describes it in Carte Blanche as “flashy,”
“gaudy,” and “huge.”
Sans specifics, then, I approached my friends at Lewis Jewelers in Ann
Arbor, Michigan, to discuss possibilities. Visitors to the National
Watch & Clock Museum “Bond” exhibits will recall that all of the
Omega watches displayed there were sourced through Lewis. They’ve also
achieved status as one of the premier authorized dealers in the world
for Breitling.
In an era when actor Daniel Craig has been seen to nonchalantly wear a
45.5mm Omega Planet Ocean as Agent 007 in the 2006 movie Casino Royale,
current Breitling models with past association to the film franchise,
such as the Navitimer, could hardly be considered huge. In fact, the
Navitimer struck me as on-par with the Omega 2531.80 Seamaster that I
was wearing to assess options at the store.
Moreover, I can’t think of another replica Breitling model in the main
(consistent with Mr Deaver’s specifications) that I’d call “flashy.”
What, then, is the Carte Blanche replica James Bond Breitling watch?
Ron Peterson of Lewis suggests “Breitling for Bentley,” personally
having shown me a range of options this past weekend — most likely
candidate for the James Bond watch in Carte Blanche being the “Motors T
Speed” (48.7mm case size), pictured above. Mr Deaver’s fictional bad-guy
Severan Hydt estimates Bond’s Breitling watch is worth £5,000. But as
readers know all-too-chillingly-well, Hydt doesn’t think of anything in
terms of new, undoubtedly seeing everything from a mindset of how it
might be depreciated. So we had to factor that in when considering
options vis-à-vis MSRP. And, that said, Mr Peterson advised me that the
information given in the novel makes the 007 Breitling much more likely
stainless steel than a gold wristwatch model.
Further considering the strong association between Bentley Motors and
the Carte Blanche publication, it is even easier to see how the
impression of a huge “Breitling for Bentley” watch could be made without
concerted pursuit of any one specimen.
So, that’s as far as folks can ever go in narrowing down this James Bond
Breitling watch; it’s as far as Jeffery Deaver went, I can report here,
having spoken directly with him about it.
And yet— what a great range of choices we now have before us in looking
for something “consistent” with what we do know. Consider this your own
